cognitive bias / heuristic

Survivorship bias

This is not a diagnosis or a personality trait. A heuristic is a normal shortcut of the mind; a bias arises where it leads to a systematically wrong judgement. If you recognise yourself here, it is an invitation to gently check rather than to label yourself.

What it is

A conclusion is drawn from those who «survived» or achieved the result, without taking into account those who acted the same way but did not reach it.

How it arises and is maintained

Successful cases are more vivid and visible: they are written about, told, on display. Failed cases are hidden — they are not seen, and the mind does not count them. The distortion arises when a general rule is built from vivid examples. It is sustained because success stories are available and emotionally contagious, while the statistics of «it did not work» are dull and rarely encountered.

How it may look

  • ««He quit his job and is now a millionaire, so should I»: those who went broke are not written about.»
  • ««Old things lasted forever»: the surviving specimens are all we see.»

Soft signs in yourself

  • Advice is built on a success story without any mention of failures.
  • You hear «everyone does it and it works for them» without numbers.
  • It is hard to name those who acted the same way and did not reach the result.
  • A vivid example outweighs statistics in an argument.

Questions for a Socratic dialogue

  1. How many people acted the same way, and what result did they reach?
  2. Where are those who acted the same way but are not visible — what happened to them?
  3. What confirms this, apart from the vivid example?
  4. How would the advice change if I also knew about the failures?

Self-directed exercise

Find the invisible

  1. Write down the conclusion built on a successful example.
  2. Describe what data about failures is missing.
  3. Formulate what the conclusion would look like with both groups taken into account.
  4. Through the week, notice success stories and ask: «where are those for whom it did not work?»

Core beliefs it may be linked to

  • ««If it worked for others, it will work for me».»
  • ««A vivid example is a rule».»
  • ««Failures are not talked about, so they do not exist».»
  • ««It is enough to copy the actions of the successful».»
