cognitive bias / heuristic

Spotlight effect

This is not a diagnosis or a personality trait. A heuristic is a normal shortcut of the mind; a bias arises where it leads to a systematically wrong judgement. If you recognise yourself here, it is an invitation to gently check rather than to label yourself.

What it is

It feels as if those around us notice and judge our mistakes and appearance far more than they actually do.

How it arises and is maintained

We are at the centre of our own attention, and the mind projects this position onto others. The distortion arises when the internal vividness of an event is taken for external visibility. It is sustained by fear of judgement and by the fact that our own mistakes are visible to us in every detail, while others' are only in broad outline.

How it may look

  • ««Everyone noticed I stumbled in the presentation» — in fact almost nobody cared.»
  • ««I cannot go out with this stain on my shirt» — others may not even notice.»

Soft signs in yourself

  • After a small slip you replay for a long time how «everyone saw it».
  • It is hard to believe that those around did not notice what is vivid to you.
  • Before appearing in public, the focus is on «how I look» rather than on the task.
  • Avoiding an action for fear that «everyone will be watching».

Questions for a Socratic dialogue

  1. How many people actually paid attention — and how many do I merely imagine?
  2. What do I myself remember of other people's small slips this week?
  3. If another person had made the same slip, what would I have thought?
  4. What changes if I assume most people are busy with themselves, not with me?

Self-directed exercise

Dim the spotlight

  1. Write down the situation and estimate how many people, in your view, noticed.
  2. Recall how many of other people's small slips you noticed this week.
  3. Compare the two numbers and adjust your estimate of «those who noticed me».
  4. Through the day, notice the «spotlight effect» and remind yourself that others are busy with themselves.

Core beliefs it may be linked to

  • ««Everyone is watching me».»
  • ««My mistakes are more visible than others'».»
  • ««If I make a mistake, it will be remembered for a long time».»
  • ««A flawless appearance is a condition of respect».»
