Hindsight bias

This is not a diagnosis or a personality trait. A heuristic is a normal shortcut of the mind; a bias arises where it leads to a systematically wrong judgement. If you recognise yourself here, it is an invitation to gently check rather than to label yourself.

What it is

Once the result is known, it feels that it was obvious in advance, although before the event the forecast was uncertain.

How it arises and is maintained

The mind reconstructs the past already knowing the ending, and imperceptibly fits the «forecast» to the result. The distortion arises when knowledge of the ending is disguised as foresight. It is sustained because knowledge of the ending is more vivid than the uncertainty before the event, and the retelling of the past goes from the result.

How it may look

  • ««I always knew it would be this way» — although before the event there was doubt.»
  • «After friends divorce: «it was clear from the very beginning».»

Soft signs in yourself

  • After the result, «it was obvious» is heard.
  • It is hard to recall what you actually thought before the event.
  • Your own past doubts are devalued in retrospect.
  • Other people's «unpredictable» failures now seem «predictable».

Questions for a Socratic dialogue

  1. What did I actually think before the event — can I recall it?
  2. What was uncertain at that moment?
  3. If the result had been different, would I also have «always known»?
  4. What stops me from admitting that the forecast was uncertain before the event?

Self-directed exercise

Reconstruct the «before»

  1. Write down the result and the phrase «I always knew».
  2. Recall what you actually thought before the event — without fitting it to the ending.
  3. List the uncertainties that were present then.
  4. Formulate a thought that admits the forecast was open before the event.
