Framing effect
This is not a diagnosis or a personality trait. A heuristic is a normal shortcut of the mind; a bias arises where it leads to a systematically wrong judgement. If you recognise yourself here, it is an invitation to gently check rather than to label yourself.
What it is
The same decision is judged differently depending on how its consequences are framed — as a gain or as a loss.
How it arises and is maintained
The mind reacts more sharply to a loss than to a gain of equal size. The distortion arises when the framing («5% failure» vs «95% success») changes the choice, although the substance is the same. It is sustained because the emotional tone of the framing is more vivid than the dry content, and a loss feels stronger than a gain.
How it may look
- ««95% survive» sounds better than «5% die» — although it is the same thing.»
- ««Keep 30% of the sum» is chosen more often than «lose 70%» — with the same outcome.»
Soft signs in yourself
- The decision changes with the framing, although the substance is the same.
- A «gain» in the framing pulls toward a choice, a «loss» toward refusal.
- It is hard to separate the emotional tone from the content.
- After reframing the same situation, the decision feels different.
Questions for a Socratic dialogue
- How is the consequence framed — as a gain or as a loss?
- If I say the same thing differently, will my choice change?
- What in this framing is emotionally charged?
- What remains if I translate the framing into neutral figures?
Self-directed exercise
Reframe neutrally
- Write down the decision and the framing in which it was offered to you.
- Translate the same framing into neutral figures and facts.
- Formulate an alternative frame (gain ↔ loss) and compare the choice.
- Through the day, notice how the framing pulls the decision and return to the content.
Core beliefs it may be linked to
- ««The framing is the substance itself».»
- ««If it sounds like a loss, it is better to refuse».»
- ««The emotional tone is a reliable signal».»
- ««Neutral figures are a trick».»
